Australian Mother Leah Stewart’s Recovery Journey After Shark Attack at Coogee Beach

Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, is on a challenging recovery journey after a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney. She lost an arm in the incident but has found comfort in messages from supporters worldwide. Her brother, Joshua Stewart, shared updates on her progress in a GoFundMe post, highlighting how these messages have inspired and strengthened her during tough times.

Emotional Support from Across the Globe

Leah has struggled with sleep during her recovery, often reading supportive messages on sleepless nights. Her brother noted the global outreach of kindness, mentioning notes from family in Australia and New Zealand, as well as strangers worldwide.

“Since the incident Leah has had difficulty sleeping, and on those nights she’s been reading back through your messages,” Joshua Stewart explained. “They’ve given her real comfort and strength.”

Following the attack on June 13, Leah faced life-threatening injuries, including multiple bites and extensive blood loss. She was placed on life support and underwent various surgeries, including the amputation of one arm, as doctors worked to stabilize her condition.

A Mother’s Resilience

Upon waking from a 10-day coma, Leah’s priority was her 1-year-old daughter, August, whom she thought of first. Joshua Stewart acknowledged the long recovery ahead, emphasizing that Leah’s brief awakening was a hopeful sign.

The family has apologized for any delays in updating supporters due to issues with the GoFundMe messaging system. Joshua Stewart expressed gratitude for the widespread support, noting Leah’s overwhelming emotions upon seeing how her story has affected so many people.

A fundraiser was initiated to assist Leah’s recovery, covering costs for prosthetics, rehabilitation, ongoing care, and necessary life adjustments. This support aims to help her resume her role as a mother and teacher.

Gratitude for Lifesavers and Medical Teams

The family extended thanks to those involved in Leah’s care, including lifesavers, first responders, and medical staff at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

“As a family we are shocked and devastated that this could happen to our beloved partner, daughter and mother who is so full of life and energy,” Joshua Stewart wrote.
