On Friday, Apple Pay encountered service disruptions, with numerous users reporting challenges in processing transactions and transferring funds. The outages were tracked by Downdetector, a site specializing in monitoring digital service disruptions.
Users reported spikes in service issues, expressing that they were unable to complete payments using Apple’s digital wallet. By just before 6 p.m. ET, approximately 1,400 issues relating to Apple Pay had been reported on Downdetector. The majority of complaints centered on fund transfers and payment difficulties. Despite the widespread issues, Apple had yet to confirm a significant outage or reveal the cause of the problems.
Newsweek reached out to Apple for comment on Friday afternoon. As of now, Apple has not responded with an official statement.
Apple Pay provides a system for users to make contactless purchases and online payments, compatible with iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac products. Instances of disruptions have occurred in the past, affecting both Apple Pay and related Wallet services. Issues such as failed transactions and Apple Cash transfer problems have been reported before. Most disruptions are resolved promptly, but they can temporarily prevent users from completing purchases or sending funds using Apple’s payment ecosystem.
Understanding the ‘Unable to Connect to Wallet Services’ Error
Many users troubled by Friday’s disruption saw an ‘Unable to Connect to Wallet Services’ error when trying to use Apple Wallet or complete transactions. This error typically suggests that the Wallet app is unable to connect with Apple’s backend systems. As a result, users may face difficulties in adding cards, verifying payment methods, or processing transactions.
Although the specific cause of Friday’s disruptions remains ambiguous, such errors are known to occur during server outages or service disruptions affecting Apple Pay and its Wallet services.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
