The Media Research Center (MRC) reported that Apple News promoted over 80 stories negatively framing issues important to Republicans, leading up to the midterm elections. No positive stories about GOP-aligned issues were highlighted, according to the conservative media watchdog.
MRC analyzed Apple News’ top 20 stories from September 15-30. Their findings indicated that voters relying on Apple News received about five negative stories a day concerning Republican policy priorities. During this period, no stories were promoted that positively presented Republican priorities.
David Bozell of MRC shared his opinion with Fox News Digital, expressing concern by saying, “Millions of voters open that app before they vote.” He questioned Apple’s editorial choices, criticizing the lack of positive stories for Republicans.
MRC staff members, Luis Cornelio and Madison Van Zant, pointed out that their study adds to existing evidence suggesting that the platform curates its feeds to push a left-wing agenda. They identified 117 stories related to GOP-aligned issues during the review period, with 72% (84 stories) featuring negative headlines and the rest neutral. None of the headlines favored GOP issues.
“Apple News ran 84 negative headlines on Republican priorities and zero positive ones. Zero!” remarked David Bozell.
The analysis highlighted how particular issues were framed. For instance, immigration was depicted through court defeats, while the economy and law and order saw sensational portrayals. The study identified ten key GOP-aligned issues based on recent polls, such as immigration, economy, law and order, reducing government spending, national security, foreign policy, and education.
Fox News Digital had earlier reported on allegations of bias in Apple News, mentioning that many executives and board members had financially supported Democrats in past election cycles. Some conservatives hoped for a shift in bias with the new CEO John Ternus, but an earlier MRC study found increased leftist outlet stories during his initial tenure.
