Anya Taylor-Joy returns to a familiar environment: the desert. This summer, she’s battling for survival in Apple TV’s crime thriller “Lucky.” Known for her roles in “Furiosa” and the upcoming “Dune: Part Three,” Taylor-Joy embraces the challenge of her latest adventure.
“Lucky” follows the story of a con artist, based on Marissa Stapley’s novel. The protagonist awakens in a hotel room, finding herself betrayed and on the run. Her father’s criminal influence complicates matters, as he offers minimal assistance from prison.
“She’s at an inflection point when we meet her…, where she’s got to chart her own course…” says Lauren Neustadter, an executive producer.
Timothy Olyphant portrays Lucky’s father, while Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor plays an FBI agent. The series commences with high-stakes situations, including a struggle for escape from a car trunk and a desert showdown.
The cast features Annette Bening as a mob leader with complex motivations. Bening describes her character as “an abused woman and she’s an abuser.”
Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine recruited Taylor-Joy, offering her an opportunity to be an executive producer.

“Lucky,” developed by Jonathan Tropper and Cassie Pappas, combines crime thriller elements with family drama. The series examines the impact of family on individual identity.
Lucky’s upbringing in crime pushes her to rely on her skills for survival. Her journey requires her to confront her past while yearning for change.
“Hers just has much higher stakes because the act of her trying to figure that out could get her killed,” explains Tropper.
Behind the scenes, Taylor-Joy contributed to casting and creative decisions. Despite the intense storyline, she enjoyed the process.
