Anthropic Outpaces OpenAI with Valuation of $900 Billion

Anthropic, previously considered a lesser-known rival to OpenAI, has seen rapid growth recently. This San Francisco-based company has taken significant strides in artificial intelligence (AI), challenging traditional boundaries and engaging in vital discussions on AI usage.

Recently, Anthropic engaged with the Pentagon regarding the application of AI in military operations. The firm also unveiled powerful AI technology, named Mythos, which has demonstrated exceptional capabilities in identifying and exploiting hidden software vulnerabilities. Additionally, Anthropic provided insights to Pope Leo XIV for his papal encyclical, cautioning against AI’s potentially disruptive impacts.

As of Thursday, Anthropic announced raising $65 billion in funding, increasing its valuation to $900 billion, surpassing OpenAI’s last valuation at $730 billion. This reinforces Anthropic’s status as the foremost AI startup globally. The company unveiled its new flagship AI model, Claude Opus 4.8, which has enhanced proficiency in generating computer code compared to its predecessor.

The investment, led by prominent investors such as Greenoaks Capital, Sequoia Capital, Altimeter Capital, and Dragoneer Investment Group, more than doubled Anthropic’s previous valuation of $380 billion from merely three months back. This substantial funding emphasizes the company’s success in advancing AI technology for software coding, evolving into a thriving business. Since improvements were made in November, hundreds of companies have subscribed for access to Anthropic’s AI coding technology. The firm announced a revenue run rate of $47 billion based on current performance.

“This funding will support us in meeting the unprecedented demand we are encountering, maintaining research advancements, and expanding Claude’s presence across various work environments,” stated Krishna Rao, Anthropic’s Chief Financial Officer.
