Andre Drummond’s arrival in New York is proving significant for the Knicks as they adjust to life without Mitchell Robinson. His standout performance against Philadelphia gives fans reason for optimism.
Drummond delivered a remarkable first-half showing, offering a clear indication of his potential contributions. The Knicks’ official public relations team celebrated his achievement during the game. According to NY Knicks PR, “Andre Drummond’s double-double in the first half today was the third fastest (14:18) by any Knicks player since 1996-97 (play-by-play era). He is also the first and only player in Knicks history to record a first half double-double in a Knicks season-opener dating back to 96-97.”
Drummond’s arrival as Robinson’s replacement is noteworthy. Robinson departed for Boston in free agency after playing a crucial role in the Knicks’ championship journey. Contributions like rebounding and interior defense from Robinson made replacing him a challenge. However, Drummond’s early impact suggests the Knicks have found a solid option in the center position.
At 33, Drummond signed a one-year, $3.9 million contract with the Knicks following a season with the Philadelphia 76ers. He averaged 6.4 points and 8.4 rebounds across 63 games, starting 25 of them.
Drummond’s contributions during the current game include 10 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, a steal, and two blocks in 18 minutes. This level of performance is what New York requires from its seasoned backup. While not expected to fully replicate Robinson’s game, Drummond’s rebounding and finishing around the rim keep the frontcourt active.
Though early in the season, and while one game cannot answer all the questions about the Knicks’ center lineup, Drummond’s initial performance is noteworthy. For the team aiming to maintain its championship form, his promising debut indicates that Robinson’s departure might not create as significant a void as anticipated.
