An American seismologist, Youlin Chen, has been detained in China since November 2024. Dr. Chen, who researched nuclear tests in North Korea for the U.S. government, was apprehended by Chinese state security officers at a Beijing airport just as he was about to leave for Boston.
Accused of espionage, his family and supporters, seeking to generate public attention, have made his case known this week. They aim to pressure China into releasing him, amidst ongoing diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Washington related to trade issues. They assert that the spying accusations are baseless, possibly stemming from his governmental research work.
The detention underscores the dangers faced by scientists and others working in areas deemed sensitive by Chinese authorities. This applies especially to those visiting China for various reasons, including business and family. Individuals born in China are at heightened risk, as security efforts under Xi Jinping’s leadership intensify against perceived espionage or subversion threats.
Dr. Chen’s wife, Yufang Rong, mentioned that President Donald Trump brought up her husband’s case during a meeting with Xi Jinping in Beijing in May. She expressed hope that Trump would again address the issue at an upcoming summit in Washington.
“I am hopeful that President Xi will inform his officials of the mistake they made by arresting a U.S. academic, allowing him to return to the U.S.,” Ms. Rong stated.
