Alabama’s Hope for Victory Dashed by Critical Foul Against Georgia

There appeared to be a slim chance for the Alabama Crimson Tide to achieve a miraculous victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. Yet, a costly mistake transformed that possibility into none. With slightly more than two minutes remaining, Georgia faced a third-and-2 deep in their own territory when Alabama defensive back Dijon Lee committed a costly penalty.

Lee’s actions involved grabbing a Georgia player by the jersey and hitting him twice with an open hand in the face, leading to a flag. This gave Georgia an automatic first down. With Alabama having no timeouts, Georgia then ran out the clock on Saturday.

Alabama’s head coach, Kalen DeBoer, displayed visible frustration. When Lee returned to the sideline, an angry DeBoer let him know in no uncertain terms that he believed Lee had compromised their chances, reportedly telling him he “just cost us the damn game.” Initially, Lee seemed resistant to DeBoer’s harsh words but had to accept them eventually.

Before that penalty, DeBoer had already been under pressure from a previous call. With three minutes left, Alabama needed a score, and there was controversy over a potential defensive pass interference by Georgia in Alabama’s favor in the end zone. However, no call was made.

Following that, quarterback Keelon Russell suffered a sack that pushed Alabama out of field goal range, eliminating their opportunity to tie the game at 20. Alabama punted and never regained possession.

The defeat marked Alabama’s first loss of the season, with Georgia advancing to a 6-0 record.
