Advancing Psychedelic Therapies for Mental Health Support

Advancing Psychedelic Therapies for Mental Health Support

The United States is grappling with a severe mental health crisis, with daily fatalities due to suicide reaching alarming numbers. Veterans are particularly affected, accounting for over 20 suicides each day. Emerging therapies using psychedelic substances offer hope for conditions such as treatment-resistant depression, PTSD, substance use disorders, and generalized anxiety disorder.

Unfortunately, many Americans, including veterans, are compelled to seek these therapies abroad due to lack of access within the country. While the Trump administration and the FDA have made strides in promoting research and facilitating psychedelic drug development with breakthrough therapy designations, further federal efforts are needed to make these therapies accessible to those who need them.

Two years ago, the bipartisan Congressional Psychedelics Advancing Therapies (PATH) Caucus sought public input on safely incorporating psychedelic medicine into the U.S. healthcare system. Responses indicated that while psychedelics are not panaceas, they can be transformative when used in a controlled environment. Therefore, new federal policies are crucial to establishing national standards for safe medical use.

The PATH Caucus feedback emphasizes the importance of advancing medical development while ensuring stringent safety, ethics, and equity standards. Essential elements include national standards for service delivery and practitioner credentialing, as well as labeling requirements and best practices for crisis management and therapeutic sessions.

Full public health potential can be realized if Congress and federal agencies act promptly to integrate psychedelic therapies. It is imperative to establish a coherent framework that ensures standards for patient protection, equitable access, and meaningful health benefits for Americans facing serious mental and physical health difficulties.

Jack Bergman, representing Michigan’s 1st Congressional District, and Lou Correa, representing California’s 46th Congressional District, are co-chairs of the Congressional PATH Caucus, advocating for these essential changes.
