RJ Mitte, known for his pivotal role in Breaking Bad, died on Monday at the age of 34, according to authorities and representatives. Mitte, who was both an actor and a disability rights advocate, was recognized for his portrayal of Walter White Jr., a character dealing with cerebral palsy, which mirrored Mitte’s real-life condition.
Cyndi Hinojosa, the Justice of the Peace in Cameron County, confirmed Mitte’s death around 1:30 p.m. at what she believed was his residence in Brownsville, Texas. While the exact cause of death remains unknown, an autopsy is set to be conducted.
On the critically acclaimed series Breaking Bad, Mitte played the son of Bryan Cranston’s character, Walter White, a chemistry teacher-turned-meth manufacturer. Cranston expressed his profound grief over Mitte’s passing, reminiscing about their time together. “I met him at 14, and he never allowed his disability to be an excuse,” Cranston shared in a social media post. He highlighted Mitte’s dedication and determination amidst a demanding schedule.
In a 2014 interview with the Associated Press, Mitte explained how his disability contributed to his acting. He remarked, “You develop a different perspective on how the world perceives you and how you see the world. This becomes an asset rather than a hindrance.” Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte moved to Los Angeles in 2006 to pursue an acting career, landing the role in Breaking Bad in 2007. The show aired from 2008 to 2013.
Following Breaking Bad, Mitte appeared on the ABC Family series Switched at Birth and the superhero parody Guardians of Justice. As a producer, he contributed to various independent films.
Mitte’s legacy extends beyond acting. As a passionate advocate, he worked with organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s. He led the Mitte Foundation, promoting disability awareness and community initiatives.
