Artists Withdraw from Great American State Fair

The Great American State Fair will feature concerts, exhibits, and tributes from June 25 to July 10 on Washington’s National Mall. Organized by Freedom 250, which markets itself as nonpartisan, this event was initiated by former President Donald Trump. Businessman Keith Krach, a Trump State Department appointee, leads the organization.

Initially, Freedom 250 announced performers like Bret Michaels, the Commodores, and Martina McBride. Some were scheduled for an ‘I Love the ’90s’ show on June 26. However, by Thursday evening, they canceled their appearances. Morris Day and Young MC also withdrew. Michaels and others stated they felt misled about the event’s theme and were concerned about potential political controversies.

In an Instagram post, Michaels expressed that he wanted to honor veterans, active military, and other hardworking Americans. But he found the event had taken a divisive turn, citing unfounded threats. McBride and Young MC expressed similar concerns through Instagram. The Commodores issued a statement opting not to publicly affiliate with any political party.

As of Friday, Flo Rida, Vanilla Ice, and Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli remain scheduled to perform. Morvan emphasized a desire to entertain and unite people. A representative for Vanilla Ice confirmed the rapper’s pride in celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary, inviting everyone to attend.

Freedom 250 organizers have not yet commented to the AP. However, spokeswoman Rachel Reisner told The New York Times that the organization remains focused on celebrations honoring American history.

In general, many artists oppose the Trump administration. While Trump has support from figures like Sylvester Stallone and Nicki Minaj, others like Taylor Swift, Robert De Niro, and Billie Eilish have criticized him. Additionally, artists like Elton John and Kenny Loggins have objected to their music being used at Trump events. After changes at the Kennedy Center, artists such as Bela Fleck and Renée Fleming also canceled their appearances.
