The case of Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old who vanished from her Tucson, Arizona home early on February 1, has raised serious concerns. Savannah Guthrie’s mother might be linked to a type of violent crime involving cryptocurrency known as a ‘wrench attack.’ Former FBI agent Jennifer Coffindaffer has suggested that the manner of Guthrie’s disappearance mirrors this criminal tactic. Connection to Scottsdale Incident
Coffindaffer previously hinted at a link between Guthrie’s case and a home invasion in Scottsdale, Arizona, one day prior. This event allegedly aimed to steal millions in cryptocurrency. Coffindaffer mentioned having discussed this ‘wrench attack,’ situated about 90 minutes north of Nancy’s residence, since early March.

‘Wrench attacks’ involve physical force or intimidation to make a victim surrender control of their cryptocurrency. This concept is derived from the hypothetical scenario where an attacker uses a wrench to coerce someone into revealing crypto keys.
These attacks have grown worldwide recently. TRM Labs reported an increase in such incidents. In the first four months of 2026 alone, CertiK documented 34 verified cases globally, marking a 41% rise from the same timeframe last year. Losses totaled approximately $101 million.
It is projected there might be around 130 incidents by year-end, leading to several hundred million dollars in potential losses. Notably, in France, kidnappings for ransom involving cryptocurrency holders have occurred. In one case, David Balland, Ledger’s co-founder, faced severe threats with his family, resulting in multiple arrests after the ordeal.
Why ‘Wrench Attacks’ Increase
These attacks rise for several reasons. TRM Labs pointed out criminals often believe cryptocurrency theft offers anonymity, making transactions hard to track. Those displaying crypto wealth publicly may attract unwanted attention. Moreover, personal data’s accessibility online increases risks for potential targets.
Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance Timeline
Nancy Guthrie was last seen in her Tucson, Arizona home on January 31, with reports of her missing the following day. Blood droplets were discovered on her porch, adding urgency to the case.
A multiagency effort, including local law enforcement and the FBI, is underway to locate her. The FBI shared surveillance footage from a doorbell camera. It shows a masked individual, labeled as a suspect, at Guthrie’s door on her disappearance’s night. No suspects have been identified yet, nor have there been significant leads in the investigation.
