Texas Teen Bitten by Shark While Boating Off Galveston Island

A Texas teenager encountered a life-threatening situation during a Memorial Day weekend boating trip. A shark bit the 17-year-old boy near Galveston Island on Monday afternoon.

The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office informed the U.S. Coast Guard about the incident, which took place around 3:15 p.m. The boy, his father, and another person were on a boat two hours offshore when the attack happened.

According to ABC 13, the teen was bitten while attempting to pull the shark onto the boat. In response, his father quickly applied a tourniquet to his wound and headed back toward the Galveston Yacht Basin.

However, their vessel became disabled near the Gulf jetties. This situation led to a Coast Guard emergency response. Rescue crews administered a second tourniquet to control the bleeding and transported the boy to shore.

Authorities have not disclosed details about the cause of the boat’s dysfunction or how the shark was brought aboard. Upon reaching the shore, the victim was conscious and taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for treatment.

As of now, officials have not provided information on the severity of the teenager’s injuries or the shark species involved. Both the U.S. Coast Guard and Galveston County Sheriff’s Office are yet to comment further on the situation.
