Influential conservatives are expressing concerns about the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in disseminating information, suggesting that relying on left-wing media and politically charged sources undermines trust among the general public. AI systems, including chatbots, occasionally provide false information, leading to a breakdown in trust. Critics argue that AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude often display a liberal bias by emphasizing information from left-leaning sources while ignoring opposing views.
The Media Research Center (MRC), a right-leaning organization, has conducted studies to assess the dependability of these chatbots, finding the results worrying. David Bozell, president of MRC, told Fox News Digital, “Silicon Valley’s new technologies are now viewed as biased and should not be trusted.”
AI Systems and Alleged Bias
Prominent AI platforms have come under scrutiny. In January, when asked about a false claim involving Charlie Kirk, ChatGPT reportedly dismissed it, citing a lack of credible evidence. Meanwhile, Claude from Anthropic was noted to have dismissed the idea of embedding the U.S. First Amendment directly in its policies.
In another instance, Fox News Digital highlighted a controversy involving Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner, who had made inappropriate comments on a now-deleted Reddit account. Major chatbots reportedly downplayed the controversy, focusing instead on Platner’s political rise and endorsements.
Public Perception and AI Dependency
AI’s growing role in information dissemination is evident, as a Pew Research Center study found that 57% of teenagers turned to these systems for information. Concerns about inaccurate information remain prevalent, with many adults who use AI for news reporting encountering inaccuracies.
Dan Schneider from MRC’s Free Speech America emphasizes the ideological slant of current AI systems, which often quote left-wing media and politically driven sources. Schneider asserts that AI should serve as a neutral information tool and blames the system’s biases on the influence of Democratic ties among key executives from major AI companies.
Editorial Concerns
A University of Cambridge PhD student, Malia Marks, recounted a troubling experience with ChatGPT, where the AI cautioned against submitting her work to The New York Post due to potential negative career impacts because of the outlet’s political leaning. Marks found this advice unsettling as she considered the Post a major media outlet.
Marks shared that ChatGPT recommended she adjust her piece for left-leaning publications. This incident further fuels concerns about AI’s role in influencing and shaping media consumption.
Inquiries to OpenAI and Anthropic from Fox News Digital remained unanswered. Google, however, stated that Gemini is designed to deliver unbiased responses devoid of any political preference. For further information or to share tips, contact Brian Flood at Fox News Digital.
