Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared a more intense stance against Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group supported by Iran. This comes despite an American-brokered ceasefire in April that aimed to reduce hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Fighting continues as both sides accuse each other of breaching the truce.
In a social media video, Mr. Netanyahu announced, “We are at war with Hezbollah.” He stated that Israeli forces have eliminated over 600 Hezbollah militants in recent weeks, signaling plans to amplify military actions against the group.
He also mentioned, “We are not removing our foot from the pedal. I said to press on the pedal even more.” Netanyahu’s statements highlight a potential escalation in the ongoing conflict.
This situation complicates the already intricate discussions between Iran and the United States. While Iran seeks to involve Lebanon in any agreement, President Trump has focused on a different narrative regarding a deal with Iran, without acknowledging the Israel-Hezbollah conflict in his recent communications.
The impact of the conflict has been severe. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli strikes on Lebanon since March have resulted in 3,185 deaths and over 9,600 injuries. The escalation began when Hezbollah resumed its attacks following an American-Israeli strike on Iran in late February. The hostilities have displaced hundreds of thousands of people in Lebanon.
