Gunman Identified in White House Shooting

Madeleine Rivera reports from Washington, D.C., about a shooting incident near the White House. A retired Secret Service agent, Jeff James, provided expert analysis on the situation. During the incident, a gunman was shot and killed after allegedly opening fire.

An ABC News correspondent, Selina Wang, was present on the White House North Lawn when the shooting occurred. She was recording a report related to President Donald Trump’s claim of nearing an Iran peace deal. The gunfire forced Wang and her crew to take cover. Her video of the incident has gained over ten million views.

Authorities identified the suspect as Nasire Best, 21, from Maryland. The Secret Service confirmed the shooting happened near 17th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW, shortly after 6 p.m. Officers returned fire, wounding the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. A bystander was also injured, but it was unclear who fired the shot that hit them.

President Trump was in the White House at the time and was briefed on the events. He expressed gratitude to the Secret Service and law enforcement through a post on Truth Social, praising their swift response. Trump emphasized the importance of security at the White House, referencing a previous incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.

Federal agents, including the FBI, assisted the Secret Service in managing the situation. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that the public would be updated as more information became available. ABC News did not immediately comment on the incident.
