Explosion at Staten Island Shipyard Causes Fatality and Injuries

A shipyard on Staten Island experienced two explosions after a fire on a dock, resulting in the death of one subcontractor and injuries to many others, according to a company representative from May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation.

On May 23, 2026, fire and police officials were present at the site to investigate the cause of the blasts. The incident happened a day earlier, and the family owning the shipyard reported that the fire erupted on a dock that was still under construction.

Nadia Adam, Executive Vice President of May Ship Repair Contracting Corporation, confirmed the fire began on a dock under construction for the past nine months. The deceased was identified as a subcontractor with longstanding ties to the company, leaving behind a wife, son, and daughter.

The company is a small, family-owned business with fewer than 50 employees, providing local employment. Adam was on the scene Saturday expressing the company’s commitment to cooperate fully with the investigation. She emphasized that safety remains their top priority.

Adam recounted that she was in the office when informed of the explosion around 3:30 p.m. on Friday. The company adhered to its safety protocols and immediately contacted emergency services.
