Texas Congressional Race Faces Controversy Over Veteran Attack Ads

A Texas congressional race is embroiled in controversy after campaign ads criticized a veteran’s military disability. The Republican primary runoff in Texas’ 35th Congressional District between John Lujan and Carlos De La Cruz has intensified with the ads.

Controversial Ads Target Veteran’s Disability

The political action committee Protect and Serve, supporting Lujan, distributed ads mocking De La Cruz’s 100% disability status. The ads questioned De La Cruz’s eligibility for disability benefits, citing his operation of a kickboxing gym and carpentry work, suggesting he manipulated the system.

De La Cruz, an Air Force veteran, served in Iraq and Afghanistan. His critics argue that despite his military injuries, he remains physically active. Charlotte Neiner, a fellow veteran, condemned the attack as insulting, especially near Memorial Day.

“This is the most shameful thing I have ever pulled out of my mailbox,” Neiner stated.

Community Reaction

Neiner criticized the ad as a disservice to veterans and pledged not to support Lujan. “A man with this little honor has no business anywhere near Congress,” she declared. She vowed to inform fellow veterans about the ads, rallying support for De La Cruz.

The Lujan campaign did not provide a comment on the matter. Under Texas law, veterans with a 100% disability rating receive a property tax exemption. In Texas, this benefits over 164,000 veterans, based on 2024 data.

Election Context

Lujan and De La Cruz failed to secure 50% of the vote in the initial primary. Lujan had 32% of the votes, while De La Cruz managed 27%. Both candidates have notable endorsements; De La Cruz has support from Donald Trump, while Lujan is backed by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.

In a parallel controversy, Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo faced criticism for statements about American Zionists, highlighting tensions in both party primaries. The race continues to draw national attention due to its contentious nature.
