The New York Mets claimed the first Subway Series win of the season against the New York Yankees on Sunday afternoon. The game featured a dramatic ending in the 10th inning.
With Mets players on first and third base and one out, rookie Carson Benge faced Yankees reliever Tim Hill. Benge hit a pivotal chopper over Hill’s head. The Yankees infielders, Anthony Volpe and Max Schuemann, collided attempting to field the ball but failed to secure it. This allowed Marcus Semien to score the winning run. The Mets emerged victorious with a 7-6 win.
Earlier, the Yankees held a 6-3 lead as the Mets entered the bottom of the ninth inning. Tyrone Taylor stepped up with Benge and Juan Soto on base. Facing two outs, Taylor launched a clutch home run off David Bednar, tying the game. This marked Taylor’s third home run of the season. “I didn’t know it was going to stay fair,” Taylor commented. “I kind of waited there to see if it would.”
On their return home, the Yankees concluded a difficult 2-7 nine-game road trip. They are set for a seven-game homestand against division rivals, the Toronto Blue Jays and the Tampa Bay Rays. Yankees’ Aaron Judge emphasized the importance of moving forward, saying, “We’ve got to have a short memory, move on and get ready … because we’ve got a big division opponent coming in.”
David Bednar, who had only two blown saves in 12 chances, expressed his frustration after the game, noting his 4.95 ERA. “Overall, it’s unacceptable, especially in that spot,” Bednar stated.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza praised his team’s persistence, stating, “We get down. We get punched in the face. We get back up. Today was a perfect example when, like I said, we didn’t play our best game and we still are able to shake hands at the end.”
