Artificial intelligence is transforming workplaces and is increasingly being integrated into performance reviews. Research from General Assembly shows a widespread adoption of AI in HR activities, feedback mechanisms, and employee evaluations.

AI Adoption in Performance Reviews

A survey by General Assembly involving over 500 senior leaders from the U.S. and U.K. highlights that 47% of respondents use AI in performance evaluations. Such reviews influence promotions, salary increments, and job security. The use of AI could fundamentally change how workers are assessed and shape career paths.

The report reveals 93% of leaders encourage AI at work, with 82% using it regularly. While much of its use remains focused on day-to-day tasks, its role in HR functions, including performance evaluations, is growing.

HR professionals employ AI tools to analyze feedback, conduct talent reviews, and create reports for work evaluations. This trend has prompted discussions on whether AI provides true employee benefits.

“Employers have heavily invested in AI, so it isn’t surprising that nearly half consider AI in performance reviews,” said Daniele Grassi, CEO of General Assembly. “Without role-specific training, employees might use AI defensively rather than to enhance business outcomes.”

Concerns Over AI in Evaluations

AI’s role in evaluations raises worker and expert concerns. Key worries include:

  • Bias in algorithms: AI may reflect flawed data.
  • Lack of transparency: Employees might not understand evaluation criteria.
  • Over-reliance on automation: Managers may defer excessive judgment to AI.

Another General Assembly report indicates only 30% of HR professionals have AI-specific training.

“Companies promoting AI as the future often penalize slower adopters,” HR consultant Bryan Driscoll commented. “Executives admitting limited AI understanding use it as a comparative measure.”

Possible benefits include more consistent feedback, reduced individual bias, and faster, detailed evaluations.

Reasons for AI Implementation

Employers view AI as a means to boost efficiency in performance management. It automates time-consuming writing tasks and reduces administrative workloads while compiling more comprehensive performance data.

AI also standardizes evaluation processes across teams. HR leaders find AI can change work processes for the better and identify necessary skills for employees to use it effectively.

“Successful AI adoption isn’t solely about usage statistics. It’s about identifying where AI can meaningfully improve work,” said Grassi. “Many leaders lack the expertise to evaluate AI usage effectively.”

The Future of AI in Performance Reviews

As companies continue investing in AI for efficiencies beyond basic tasks, its role in reviews will grow. Progress will depend largely on manager training and establishing clear ethical guidelines.

“If AI leads to discriminatory outcomes, employers are liable as if they made such decisions,” Driscoll remarked. “A lack of transparency leads to disengagement, potentially causing turnover and litigation issues.”

To retain workforce trust and minimize legal risks, companies must navigate AI usage carefully.
