Trump Administration’s Plan for a Triumphal Arch Raises Questions

The Trump administration aims to construct a monumental 250-foot arch near Arlington National Cemetery. This project is seen as a tribute to President Donald Trump. However, the proposal has sparked controversy regarding its legislative justification.

The administration asserts that a congressional authorization from 1919 provides sufficient legal grounding for the arch’s construction. This authorization was originally intended for another project that was never realized. Consequently, the administration believes it negates the need for contemporary congressional approval.

On May 15, workers were observed taking measurements at Memorial Circle, the designated location for the arch. The administration’s stance has been met with scrutiny, as it relies heavily on historical legislative action.
