Texas High School Student Faces Threats After Speaking Out Against Islamic Group Activity

Marco Hunter-Lopez, a student at Wylie East High School in Texas, gained national attention after objecting to an Islamic group distributing hijabs at his school. He shared his experiences with Congress and revealed receiving death threats after speaking out. Hunter-Lopez, who is the president of his school’s Republican Club, testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Constitution and Limited Government.

On February 2, he encountered an Islamic booth hosted by four women from the group “Why Islam?”. They offered hijabs, Quran copies with conversion instructions, and a pamphlet called “Understanding Sharia”.

Hunter-Lopez’s social media post about this incident went viral. He stated that the group’s actions violated school policy and parental rights. According to him, promoting Sharia law materials to students without parental consent risks undermining educational principles.

During his testimony, Rep. Jamie Raskin questioned the need for laws targeting specific religious populations. Hunter-Lopez responded by highlighting America’s Christian foundations, noting that many signers of the Declaration of Independence were Christians.

Some conservatives praised Hunter-Lopez for his articulate answers. Though Raskin cut him off during his argument, Hunter-Lopez stood firm due to his beliefs and community support.

There were also claims of hostile scrutiny toward Hunter-Lopez’s Republican Club since its launch. He accused school officials of denying the club for being too political, targeting posters, and unevenly enforcing policies. However, Wylie Independent School District refuted these claims, stating they uphold neutral religious policies. They mentioned a procedural error in the incident on February 2 but stressed there was no intention to promote any religious viewpoint.

Following this incident, the school updated its procedures to prevent similar situations. Rep. Chip Roy leads efforts against what he perceives as increasing Sharia influence in Texas. The state has over 300 mosques and proposals for Muslim-only cities, according to Roy.

Hunter-Lopez’s experience is perceived as an example of this influence, and he is commended for his courage in speaking out.
