A tragic hit-and-run incident claimed the life of Emily Mae Smith, a promising 20-year-old college student from Greenville, New York. Emily, a business administration major and rising star on the State University of New York (SUNY) Potsdam’s women’s basketball team, was struck near Pierrepont Avenue in Potsdam, early Saturday morning.
The Potsdam Police Department reported that Emily was walking when an older-model black Cadillac Escalade hit her. The accident occurred at approximately 3:37 a.m. Despite being transported to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, she succumbed to her injuries.
Authorities identified Jakob D. Krise, 18, from Brasher Falls, New York, as the driver. They arrested him a few hours after the incident on U.S. Route 11. Krise faces numerous charges, including leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death, driving while intoxicated under zero tolerance, and driving across hazard markings. He was arraigned in Town of Pierrepont Court and released under probation supervision, with a court appearance scheduled in Potsdam Town Court.
In her first year here at SUNY Potsdam, Emily was already excelling academically, being named to the Dean’s List, and had built a tight-knit circle of friends and mentors, said SUNY Potsdam President, Dr. Suzanne Smith.
Emily’s contributions extended beyond academics. Her basketball coach, Brittany Cohen, expressed profound sorrow at the loss of her team captain, describing Emily as beloved by teammates, coaches, and anyone who met her. Emily’s absence is deeply felt on campus, particularly in the athletics community.
To honor Emily’s memory, SUNY Potsdam announced that the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium will serve as a memorial space. The loss of Emily is not just a blow to the university but to all who knew her.
Athletic Director Mark Misiak shared the community’s grief: “We are heartbroken and devastated by the news of Emily’s passing. To lose such a bright soul at such a young age is a tragedy.”
