Ducks are a familiar sight around Wolfe Wildlife Refuge in Oak Lawn. However, one duck garners special attention: Duke Mallard. Known affectionately as The Duke, he is a cherished mascot of the Oak Lawn Park District.
Appearance at Howl-O-Ween
Duke Mallard captivated visitors at the recent Howl-O-Ween event hosted by the Oak Lawn Park District. Various themed stations were set up, including activities like the Guess the Vampire game and Ernie’s Rubber Duck Game from Sesame Street. The event also featured witches, Paw Patrol characters, and a pumpkin patch. Duke, portrayed by a Park District employee, mingled with attendees, delighting visitors of all ages.
Jack Leiser, a former Park District employee and now a firefighter, attended with his family. He shared his special connection to Wolfe Wildlife Refuge, having proposed to his wife there. “It’s a special place,” he mentioned, appreciating the chance to enjoy nature with his family. His daughter, Lucy, was particularly taken with Duke’s playful antics.
Duke’s Origins and Evolution
Duke Mallard appeared in 2023 when the Park District sought a new mascot. Genae Grabowski, once a part-time Zamboni operator and now a senior graphic designer, was pivotal in creating Duke’s character. Collaborating with her supervisor, she infused Duke’s backstory with a creative twist, connecting it with the older mascot Seemore Eagle. Rather than removing Seemore, they established a narrative of him being Duke’s adoptive father.
Grabowski explained how her personal journey paralleled Duke’s development. “A lot of my feelings and personality are reflected in Duke Mallard,” she said. Her enthusiasm for her work was evident as she participated in numerous events, including donning Duke’s costume at a Chicago Sky WNBA game.
Duke’s Impact on the Community
Employees and residents of the Oak Lawn community warmly embrace Duke. Michael Sinkewich, general manager of the district’s Ice Arena, views Duke as a charismatic ambassador. “The kids all love him,” he noted. Brandi Brumfield, who leads dance and theatre programs, shares this sentiment. “Duke brings so many smiles,” she stated, praising his lively presence at events.
Both Duke and his fictional story add a whimsical charm to the community, connecting the Oak Lawn Park District with its visitors in a unique way. As Duke interacts with families and children, he becomes more than a mascot, embodying the fun and community spirit of Oak Lawn.
