The collaboration between Mike McDaniel and the Los Angeles Chargers has faced significant hurdles. In the first six games, the Chargers have failed to secure a single win. This poor performance, especially in offense, has sparked discussions about changing the offensive play caller. However, head coach Jim Harbaugh remains steadfast in his support for McDaniel.
Harbaugh expressed his confidence in McDaniel’s capabilities, citing his talent, work ethic, and overall ability. According to The Athletic, Harbaugh mentioned the team’s commitment to McDaniel during a Wednesday press conference. He noted that the Chargers’ internal reviews over the bye week influenced the decision to maintain their current course.
“We’re very confident in Mike and his talent, his work ethic and his ability,” Harbaugh stated.
The Chargers had a bye in Week 7, following a mere six-point output in a Week 6 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs. This loss brought their already low average scoring down to 15 points per game, the lowest in the league. As a result, the Chargers are the only NFL team yet to notch a victory this season.
Importantly, McDaniel was previously with the Miami Dolphins, ending his tenure there in January. Harbaugh then recruited him, acknowledging his reputation as a top-tier offensive strategist. McDaniel aimed to enhance Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert’s dominance in his position, highlighting the quarterback’s exceptional talent.
In the offseason, McDaniel influenced Herbert’s training, prompting adjustments like altering his shotgun stance and refining his footwork. Herbert practiced with a green water ball to simulate throwing, minimizing strain while focusing on form.
Despite these efforts, Herbert leads the league with eight interceptions. Previously, McDaniel shaped the Dolphins’ 2023 offense, a unit that scored a record 70 points and gained over 700 yards in a game against the Denver Broncos.
