The annual Lil’ Trick-or-Reading program was held at the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire on October 23. The program reached full capacity with 30 children, unrelated to their families or caregivers.
The event kicked off in the Meeting Room with a story time session, transitioning to a parade of trick-or-treating stations throughout the library. Costumes were encouraged, prompting both children and parents to embrace the festive spirit. Corey Schwartz from Lincolnshire and her son, Parker, enjoyed the event’s activities.
During story time, one parent donned a banana costume, playfully matching a child’s snack choice of an actual banana. Cathy Cooper, a parent from Lincolnshire, expressed her enjoyment, noting that her kids have a wonderful time socializing with others and commending the friendly librarians.
Attendees included the Choh family from Buffalo Grove. Tim Choh wore a banana costume and voiced that the event brought happiness to their 11-month-old son, Atlas. First-time attendees, Ellie Wang and her mother-in-law Ling Ling, from Japan, were present with Riley, their nearly 11-month-old granddaughter. Ellie shared her delight in Riley’s first costume experience, while Ling Ling explored Halloween traditions.
The event catered to infants and toddlers through two morning sessions. Early Literacy Librarian Kelsey Cole-Burns highlighted the program’s gentle introduction to Halloween through a not-so-spooky storytime, followed by a costume parade. She emphasized the value of providing a warm indoor environment for families during unpredictable Fall weather.
The Lil’ Trick-or-Reading program has been a library staple for over five years. Cole-Burns expressed the library’s role as a community hub where children learn and grow. The Vernon Area Library takes pride in offering this special experience for young children and their families.
Older siblings also participated, collecting Halloween-themed goodies from costumed library staff. Nova Jargal from Buffalo Grove enjoyed the event in a pink gown, actively joining the trick-or-treating. The library’s accountant, Kelly Womack, embraced the spirit as Cleopatra, finding joy in the fun-filled library activities.
The Schwartz family, including young Parker and infant Riley, connected with Rachel Quinlan and her son Jack during story time. Corey Schwartz appreciated the community gathering, enjoying the holiday fun before Halloween. Marla Jargal, Nova’s mother, also highlighted the importance of story time.
Since its founding in 1974, the Vernon Area Public Library District has served over 44,000 residents from Lincolnshire to various parts of Lake County. Located at 300 Olde Half Day Road in Lincolnshire, more information can be found at the library’s website.
