Three Democratic candidates from various regions of Virginia campaigned together on Monday, highlighting the ongoing war in Iran as an important issue for the upcoming elections. They argued that the war’s implications go beyond just affecting gas prices.
In a state deeply tied to the military, the impact of the war is significant. Former representative Elaine Luria, during a rally in eastern Henrico County near Richmond, criticized the administration for not being truthful about casualty numbers. Luria is running against Rep. Jen Kiggans, a fellow Navy veteran, in Virginia’s 2nd District, which includes Virginia Beach and several major Navy bases.
Henrico prosecutor Shannon Taylor is challenging Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District, and she has also targeted her opponent’s support for the war. Similarly, former representative Tom Perriello, who is seeking to regain his previous seat in the 5th District against Rep. John McGuire, stated his aim includes ending the war.
Former transportation secretary and military veteran Pete Buttigieg spoke at the rally, urging Virginia Democrats to pursue a majority in the House, emphasizing that capturing the four necessary seats can play a decisive role. “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” Buttigieg said to an audience of over 200 supporters.
