Reactions Emerge After Federal Raid on Ilhan Omar’s Home

In Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Somali community expressed strong reactions following a federal raid on Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence. Jamal Osman, the Somali-born vice president of the Minneapolis City Council, criticized former President Donald Trump and his administration, highlighting the fear felt within the community.

“Somalis feel attacked by President Trump,” Osman stated while discussing the impact of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents conducting the raid. He emphasized concerns over violations of law by Trump and intimidation faced by the community due to raids by ICE.

“We have seen the threats and unacceptable language he uses against my community,” Osman added, expressing hopes for change.

Abdi, a Minneapolis social worker and Somali-born resident, described the raid as an attempt to dehumanize a sitting congresswoman. He believes the actions reflect Trump’s disdain toward Somalis, particularly because of Omar.

Abdi shared fears about increased harassment of Somalis in America, attributing it to Trump’s influence. “If they revoke her citizenship, it feels like a dictatorship,” he said, questioning the fairness and due process expected in the United States.

Another Somali American woman, speaking anonymously, shared her lack of surprise regarding the raid. She noted that suspicion around Omar has been ongoing, leading her to expect an investigation eventually.

The White House, responding to community comments, pointed to Trump’s previous statements about Omar. Trump remarked on the investigation, expressing personal disdain but asserting he wasn’t involved in legal matters.

Federal agents executed a search warrant at Omar’s residence amid an investigation into potential fraud in her citizenship application. HSI’s operation could have significant implications, with sources indicating it might lead to Omar’s denaturalization.

Reacting on social media, Omar condemned the raid as an abuse of power, criticizing the use of federal enforcement for political targeting. She emphasized her stance against being wrongly accused.
