Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Pseudo-Royal Ventures Spark Concern

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are under scrutiny for recent activities that mirror royal engagements, raising concerns about sidestepping the late Queen Elizabeth II’s wishes. On October 15, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex plan to visit Nottingham in their first joint public appearance in the U.K. since their return.

Nottingham is significant for Harry and Meghan as it marked the beginning of their public life together after their 2017 engagement. Kinsey Schofield, a YouTube show host, noted that their plans to visit several charities could resemble official royal engagements, causing “frustration” within Buckingham Palace.

“Harry and Meghan are no longer working members of the royal family,” said Schofield. “King Charles recently reminded his government that they are private citizens. Their appearances mimic royal life without the necessary responsibilities.”

Royal engagements entail diplomacy and representation of the sovereign. Harry and Meghan’s visits involve charity without the same authority, said Schofield, noting their attempts to imitate royal engagement without constitutional significance.

Helena Chard, a British broadcaster, stated, “They are looking to reclaim the spotlight they left behind. It’s a pseudo royal reboot.”

In January 2020, Queen Elizabeth II set firm boundaries at the Sandringham Summit, stating no “half in, half out” roles for the Sussexes. The couple had to step away from royal duties while pursuing independent ventures. Buckingham Palace reiterated this with a statement in 2021, emphasizing the impossibility of continuing public service responsibilities.

Harry and Meghan responded, asserting, “We can all live a life of service. Service is universal.” The couple returned to the U.K., focusing on charitable activities such as visiting a food bank, reconnecting with the Hubb Community Kitchen, and supporting young people through mentoring and sports initiatives.

Despite their private citizen status, their public appearances often resemble royal engagements, leading commentators to argue that this blurs the distinction. Christopher Andersen, author of “Kate!”, questioned King Charles’s stance, suggesting the Sussexes’ actions risk defying royal instructions.

Royal experts expressed concerns that Harry and Meghan’s appearances place King Charles in a complex situation. While the couple retains their titles and international profile, their activities may appear similar to official duties.

Kinsey Schofield noted, “The king maintains decisiveness to protect his interests. The challenge lies in demonstrating the same strength regarding his youngest son.”

Sources suggest Harry and Meghan focus on projects that matter to them, with excitement about their work. Despite reuniting with the king in July, Harry’s relationship with his brother, Prince William, remains strained, reportedly worsened by his return.

Ian Pelham Turner suggested, “As private citizens, Harry and Meghan can pursue projects without royal approval. Their actions highlight the diminishing control ‘The Firm’ holds over them.” This autonomy presents both opportunities and challenges for the Sussexes and royal circles.

The ongoing tension encourages royal supporters to push King Charles for a more assertive response. Schofield warned that the monarchy must safeguard its integrity and distinguish between working royals and private citizens.

Schofield observed, “Harry and Meghan are reengaging with a formula they previously distanced themselves from. Despite seeking greater opportunities outside royal circles, they seem to find their royal connection invaluable.”
