The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has completed its investigation into the largest recorded cyclosporiasis outbreak in United States history. Investigators discovered the presence of the parasite in the environment where the lettuce was cultivated in Mexico and processed by Taylor Farms de Mexico.
The investigation revealed the parasite in both a wastewater tank and a drainage ditch. However, the agency could not ascertain the exact cause of contamination. The completion of this investigation marks a significant step in understanding the outbreak.
A truck was seen arriving at a Taylor Farms facility earlier this summer in Salinas, California. The facility is integral to the processing operations linked to the outbreak, which involved contaminated lettuce.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the cyclospora parasite, leading to severe gastrointestinal symptoms. The outbreak heightened concerns about food safety, particularly the assurance of clean water sources and hygienic processing standards in supply chains.
