Kentucky State Trooper Killed in Traffic Stop: Suspect Apprehended

A routine traffic stop on a Kentucky interstate became fatal when a state trooper was shot on Monday, leading to a manhunt that concluded with a suspect in custody. Trooper Hayden Phillips, 30, was killed on Interstate 65 in Warren County. He is survived by his wife and three young sons.

“He was senselessly murdered,” U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner stated during a news conference on Monday night. “We have a wife who expected her husband to come home. We have three little boys who don’t have a dad.”

Phillips, a three-year veteran of the Kentucky State Police, was based at Post 3 in Bowling Green. He graduated from Cadet Class 103 and was known among his peers as Unit 369.

Bumgarner praised Phillips’ commitment to community safety, saying, “He gave the ultimate sacrifice.” Kentucky State Police Commissioner Col. Phillip Burnett Jr. vowed to seek justice for Phillips.

“We will seek justice for Hayden. Let me repeat that, we will seek justice for Hayden. We will not rest until this happens,” Burnett declared.

Burnett described Phillips’ death as an extremely challenging situation for the agency. “His dedication to duty and commitment to the Commonwealth will never be forgotten,” he remarked. “Our hearts break for Trooper Phillips’ family, loved ones, and fellow troopers as we grieve this tremendous loss.”

State police initially reported a trooper-involved shooting on northbound I-65 near the 38-mile marker. A public alert was issued to watch for a bluish-gray Honda Civic with an Alabama tag seen at the shooting scene. Authorities identified Emonnie Branch as the suspect in a Blue Alert, which was withdrawn after Louisville Metro Police apprehended Branch. State police confirmed that Branch faces murder charges for the death of a first responder in Warren County.

Addressing the incident, Burnett criticized Branch’s “cowardly actions.” Officials have not disclosed why Phillips stopped the vehicle or whether Branch had a previous criminal record.

“One of our own was gunned down and murdered on the side of the road,” Bumgarner said, pledging comprehensive support to Kentucky prosecutors and investigators.

Burnett assured Phillips’ family that state police would be supportive. “You will not walk this path alone,” he promised. In a tribute, state police wrote, “Rest Easy U/369. We have it from here.”

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear praised Phillips as a hero devoted to protecting the state. Beshear emphasized Phillips’ role as “a devoted husband and loving father to three children.” He called for the community to support the family during “this unimaginable time.”

Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., expressed gratitude for the swift response by law enforcement and offered prayers for Phillips’ wife, children, and colleagues. Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., also urged prayers for Phillips’ family and fellow officers. Additionally, Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Ky., echoed prayers for Phillips’ family and affirmed that Kentucky would remember his service.

“Alongside his fellow KSP troopers and all who knew and loved him, we will not forget his service to our commonwealth,” McGarvey wrote.

Country singer Lee Greenwood expressed condolences, noting that he and his wife, Kim, would “always stand with the men and women in blue.”
