Trunk-or-Treat in Space Event at Triton College

Halloween fun is arriving early at Triton College with the Trunk-or-Treat in Space event. Scheduled for October 10, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the event takes place outside the Cernan Earth and Space Center, located at 2000 5th Ave., River Grove. Families can enjoy this experience for free, no reservations needed.

Approximately 15 cars, adorned in colorful decor, will be stationed in the Cernan Center’s parking area. Kids will have the chance to collect candy and other goodies from these vehicles. “This event began about three years ago,” said Tina Lilly, director of Business Services at Triton College. “It is hosted and sponsored by the Alumni Association.” The concept emerged from feedback received from Triton’s alumni survey. “Our alumni wanted an event that was fun, friendly, and free for their kids,” Lilly explained.

The Trunk-or-Treat format has gained popularity due to its simplicity and safety. It offers a controlled environment where children move from car to car collecting treats. Alumni members contribute by bringing their cars and distributing candy. The event also includes collaboration with the Cernan Center, which offers a free Halloween-themed space show.

The event’s success was evident from the turnout in its initial years, with over 500 attendees. “This is part of what the Alumni Association does,” Lilly noted. “We organize events to bring alumni and community friends back to campus.” Both kids and parents attend in costumes, creating a fun and inclusive atmosphere.

Visitors can also attend a Planetarium show offered at various times: 11:45 a.m., 12:15 p.m., 1 p.m., and 1:30 p.m. “We want everyone to experience what our Planetarium offers,” said Kris Kovach McCall, director of the Cernan Center. These 20-minute shows are complimentary and designed to entertain and educate.

The show, crafted by Planetarium educator Jordan Jubeck, combines space knowledge with humor and lasers. Jubeck remarked, “The show focuses on Halloween themes and astronomy. We discuss Halloween as a celestial holiday and the spooky wonders of space, like the fate of dying stars. A touch of laser effects ends the experience on a fun note.”

McCall highlighted that the Planetarium appeals to audiences of all ages, stating, “People generally show interest in space, no matter their age.” The event encourages attendees to explore the Cernan Center further, including the exhibit hall and Star Store. “We offer a 10 percent discount at the Star Store on Trunk-or-Treat day,” McCall mentioned, suggesting it as a start for holiday shopping.

The Trunk-or-Treat in Space event goes on regardless of weather, moving indoors if necessary. It delivers a unique and educational Halloween celebration suitable for all family members.
