Drone Attack on Moscow
Ukraine launched a significant drone attack on Moscow, marking its largest operation to date. Moscow’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, reported that at least 450 drones aimed at the Russian capital were intercepted. The attacks coincided with the last day of voting in Russia’s parliamentary elections. President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia Party was anticipated to secure a victory, although opposition efforts were suppressed, with anti-war parties banned and activists imprisoned.
A missile reportedly struck the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building, leading to casualties. Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyev stated that two individuals, an elderly man and a 44-year-old woman, were killed and six others injured. Vorobyev mentioned 249 drones were downed in the wider Moscow region, igniting several residential fires. This incident caused temporary suspension of flights at Vnukovo airport, which were later resumed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, via a post on X, emphasized the strategic nature of the attacks, targeting Russia’s key oil facilities. He urged Moscow to cease hostilities and consider peace over building air defenses, highlighting the potential for de-escalation in areas like energy and food security.
Impact on Russian Infrastructure
Ukraine’s recent military actions have focused on disrupting Russian oil infrastructure, crucial to the Russian economy. Reports from the International Energy Agency indicate a decline in Russia’s refining capacity, reaching its lowest in two decades. Fuel shortages are appearing at some stations. Ukrainian drones also allegedly damaged warehouses of Russian e-commerce firm Wildberries, which Kyiv accuses of supplying military drone components, a claim denied by Moscow.
Meanwhile, Russian strikes have targeted Ukrainian facilities, including a deadly attack on a shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih, resulting in 16 fatalities.
Ukrainian Counteroffensive
Combat persists across frontline areas, especially in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region, contested by Russia. A recent Ukrainian counteroffensive targeted a Russian-protruding position near Lyman. Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili noted that Ukrainian forces successfully eliminated the Russian stronghold north of Lyman.
Additionally, a sanctions bill signed by former President Donald Trump aims to economically penalize Russia, targeting its major oil and gas consumers, banks, and oil transportation, including President Putin.
