Unexpected Encounter with Gulf Sturgeon Captured in Viral Video

A Florida woman, Tiffany Raulerson, experienced a shocking moment during what she thought would be a tranquil swim in the Suwannee River. Familiar with Florida’s diverse wildlife, Raulerson was not expecting to film a jumping fish that astonished her.

While recording an aesthetic clip for friends, Raulerson’s plans shifted when she saw a rare sturgeon leap from the water. There are 27 sturgeon species globally, over half are critically endangered. Raulerson likely recorded a Gulf sturgeon. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Suwannee River boasts Florida’s largest Gulf sturgeon population.

Raulerson shared this encounter during a family visit to the river, stating the location holds special meaning for them. Gulf sturgeon are commonly seen in the area, yet capturing one on video at that moment marked the event.

She posted the footage to her TikTok account, @tiffanyraulerson6, on September 8, with views surpassing 38 million. The viral moment shows Raulerson’s reaction, with a display text saying, “Ain’t no way, man.” She remarked to Newsweek about their commonality in the river, yet she emphasized the uniqueness of filming the jump.

About Sturgeon

Sturgeon have existed since dinosaur times, with several species located in North America. Gulf sturgeon can grow between six to eight feet and weigh up to 200 pounds, making a sudden encounter startling for anyone in the water.

Intimidating as they may appear, sturgeon do not view humans as prey. They primarily consume small aquatic life, representing little danger to swimmers. However, sturgeons can leap powerfully from the water, and if in the direct path of one, such jumps can pose a threat.

For swimmers facing sturgeon or large wildlife, giving space is safest. Avoid touching or chasing, and if uncomfortable, calmly exit the water.

TikTok Impact

The video stirred debate among viewers. Some were awed by the fish’s agility and size, while others questioned the authenticity or species.

Raulerson commented on the varied reactions, from amazement to skepticism, underscoring the impact of sharing natural moments online. For locals familiar with the Suwannee River, the footage emphasizes nature’s ability to surprise even in well-known environments.
