CNN is facing new changes as Paramount merges with Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). This development marks another shift in ownership for the network. “I think people want to get this done,” a CNN employee shared with Fox News Digital.
The merger, valued at $111 billion, overcame a major hurdle. An antitrust lawsuit led by California Attorney General Rob Bonta and other Democratic state AGs was settled, avoiding a trial set for March 2027. This settlement allows Paramount’s CEO, David Ellison, to assume control of major assets like CNN and CBS News, alongside two large Hollywood studios.
An independent editorial board will oversee CNN and CBS News as part of the agreement. This board’s role remains a topic of discussion within CNN. Some employees report a mix of opinions regarding the merger.
There are fewer people internally opposed to the merger than before,” stated one CNN staff member.
Another employee disagreed, expressing that viewpoints haven’t altered at CNN. They noted that public discussions on the matter may have quieted but opinions have not necessarily changed.
As the merger progresses, uncertainty surrounds CNN. Anticipated company-wide layoffs could affect the network significantly. Leadership changes are also expected, and it’s unclear if current CEO Mark Thompson will remain in his position. Bari Weiss, CBS News editor-in-chief, has been considered for overseeing both CNN and CBS News.
Ellison faces pressure to make a decisive leadership choice,” confessed a second staffer.
This sentiment reflects ongoing concerns over potential significant reductions impacting the newsroom. An insider conveyed apprehension about these likely “dramatic” changes.
CNN will be diminished,” they acknowledged, pointing out similar issues affecting other legacy media.
CNN representatives and Paramount declined to comment. Controversy surrounding Ellison’s management arises from his perceived relationship with former President Donald Trump. Criticism focuses on concerns that CNN’s coverage could shift in a new direction under Ellison’s influence, especially if he works with Bari Weiss.
In response to this, Ellison has assured that CNN will retain its editorial independence post-merger. Writing in The New York Times, he emphasized that he has supported political candidates from both parties, holding a spectrum of views. He indicated that news should always be fact-based and truthful.
Great news organizations like CNN and CBS News aim to present balanced reporting,” Ellison declared, highlighting the need for independent newsrooms.
