Anthropic CEO Warns of AI Arms Race Between US and China

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei shared his concerns about the developing artificial intelligence (AI) race between the United States and China, likening it to the Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union. He emphasized the need for both nations to address the threat of ‘potential destruction’ arising from each other’s advancements in AI technology.

Amodei reiterated his apprehensions in an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, warning that unchecked AI development could pose a significant threat to humanity. He urged slowing down AI production but faced the question of whether this would allow China to gain a competitive edge.

Amodei acknowledged the complexity of the situation but suggested initiating discussions with China, similar to previous talks between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. He stated, “It’s not in any government’s interest to have bioterrorism. We should talk with the Chinese to see if we can work together to put limits on the speed of technology development.” He noted the importance of such discussions in curbing potential destruction, similar to Cold War-era nuclear negotiations.

Although critics worry about China potentially surpassing the U.S. in AI development, Amodei clarified he isn’t advocating using the Cold War as a model. He believes disarmament negotiations can offer a valuable perspective at the geopolitical level, particularly given AI’s impact on cybersecurity and national security.

Amodei’s essay advocating for reduced AI development gathered support from prominent figures like Elon Musk and Sam Altman but faced criticism from others within the tech community. Former White House AI advisor David Sacks and other entrepreneurs expressed doubts about Amodei’s warnings, perceiving them as attempts to alarm the public to force governmental control over AI.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former researcher at OpenAI, responded to Amodei’s essay by questioning the sufficiency of voluntary industry measures to prevent advanced AI systems from escaping human control. He voiced concerns on Fox News Live that AI could eventually overpower humans if integrated too deeply into critical systems.

Fox News Digital sought comments from Anthropic and received input from former Anthropic staffer Jacob Coxon, who also disagreed with Amodei’s approach. CBS correspondent Jo Ling Kent engaged with Amodei to explore the best course of action in this global AI challenge.
