Mallorca Seeks Wealthier American Tourists Amid Overtourism Concerns

Mallorca, a Spanish island in the Balearic Islands, is a popular vacation spot. It attracted over 13 million tourists in the first ten months of 2025, according to the Balearic Islands Statistics Institute. Amid challenges of overtourism, local officials aim to attract fewer, wealthier visitors to shift away from its party destination image.

Pedro Homar from Palma’s tourism board expressed interest in American tourists, known for higher daily spending than Europeans. Americans spent $410 a day in July, compared to $240 for Germans and $260 for British travelers. American visits to Mallorca rose by 60% up to June, with airlines like United expanding direct services.

Julie Middlebrook-Levin, a luxury travel advisor, noted Mallorca’s growing appeal to Americans due to distinct experiences from European travelers. She emphasized the demand for local experiences and cuisine.

Homar contrasted Americans with German and British tourists, stating their primary motivation is partying. He believes tourism should focus on quality over quantity, aiming for fewer tourists spending more. Some locals remain skeptical, feeling the shift doesn’t address deeper issues. Stella Arbona, a local bakery worker, expressed concerns about visitors occupying local spaces and disrespecting workers.

Overall, Middlebrook-Levin advised tourists to be respectful during their visits. With tourism spotlighted for other concerns, pickpocketing incidents have been reported near Palma. Additionally, officials are considering visitor limits, addressing overtourism challenges alongside neighboring Ibiza and Menorca.
