USC Trojans Home Opener Brings Both Fans and Chaos

The USC Trojans faced the San Jose State Spartans in their home opener at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. However, many fans chose to stay away due to the heat. Head Coach Lincoln Riley downplayed the low attendance, dismissing it as a ‘false narrative’ propagated by people unfamiliar with the program. Riley emphasized the growth in attendance over the years and maintained optimism for continued strong support.

During the game on August 29, 2026, a USC cheerleader used a portable fan to combat the oppressive heat. Despite this, fans finally gathered in significant numbers during another home game against Louisiana-Lafayette where the Trojans improved their record to 3-0. This suggested that the initial attendance concerns were short-lived.

Challenges arose in keeping fans focused on their team’s performance. While cheering on the Trojans, who scored 49 points, some fans engaged in altercations amongst themselves. An incident involved a fan, wearing a backward bedazzled hat, who confronted another spectator over a personal dispute. As tensions escalated, punches were exchanged between supporters.

Although these confrontations reflect poorly on fan conduct, the dedication to support their team was clear. Reports suggest alcohol may have fueled the altercations. Despite these issues, the USC fan base showed commitment in gathering to cheer for the Trojans, aiming to see them secure victories throughout the season.
