Emma Peterson’s Growth and Achievements
Emma Peterson, a junior outside hitter from Geneva, is receiving substantial guidance from her coach, Lauren Kosecki. Kosecki, with a rich background as a Division I volleyball player for Northern Illinois and Michigan State, provides valuable insights that facilitate Peterson’s continuous improvement, especially as she prepares to head to Dayton.
Peterson appreciates Kosecki’s expertise, stating, “She’s easy to go to for anything.” However, natural talent plays a significant role in her achievements as well. In a recent nonconference match, Peterson showcased her ability by delivering 16 kills for Geneva during their 25-9, 26-24 victory over West Aurora.
Performance and Contributions in the Game
Despite Geneva’s challenging moments after losing a 9-2 lead and trailing 22-20 in the second game, Peterson’s contribution of 10 kills helped secure the win. Zori Malone complemented Peterson’s performance with six kills and six aces. On the opposing side, Natalie Mitchell led West Aurora with six kills.
The Evolution of Peterson’s Skills
In the prior season, Peterson emerged as a promising new talent on the varsity team and has now established herself as a formidable attacker. With 112 kills this season, her coach has witnessed her progression in confidence and leadership.
Kosecki comments on her growth, emphasizing Peterson’s enhanced ability to lead. “People look to you, so take charge,” she said. Peterson has embraced aggressiveness, particularly during difficult plays, opting for powerful swings rather than simple returns.
Learning to Handle Challenging Matches
Geneva’s recent loss to St. Charles North highlighted the need for sustained aggressiveness, which was not apparent in their performance. Peterson acknowledges this, reflecting on her strategy to maintain aggression during tightly contested matches.
Thursday’s match against West Aurora showed the Vikings’ commitment to changing this approach. Despite West Aurora’s surge, which saw them leading 22-20, two key kills from Peterson forced a tie, followed by errors from West Aurora that sealed Geneva’s win.
The Importance of Back-Row Offense
The effectiveness of Geneva’s back-row offense was evident, with Peterson and Malone making significant contributions. “I think doing that a lot more will make it harder for teams to score on us,” Peterson noted.
This strategy is crucial for enhancing Geneva’s overall performance and strengthening their defensive capabilities.
