Stefany Shaheen’s Primary Win Signals Key Congressional Race

Stefany Shaheen, daughter of the retiring Senator Jeanne Shaheen, has won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District early Wednesday morning. It is a significant contest for the Democrats as they aim to secure control in the House of Representatives. The district’s current representative, Rep. Chris Pappas, a Democrat from New Hampshire, has decided to pursue a U.S. Senate bid, leaving his seat open.

Pappas, who has been representing the district since 2019, confirmed his Senate ambitions last year. “I’m honored that the people of New Hampshire have entrusted me to fight for them. I’m proud of what we have accomplished together, and I’m going to continue this fight in the U.S. Senate,” Pappas stated in a press release.

The primary race saw extensive interest from Democratic candidates vying for Pappas’s seat. Besides Shaheen, the field included eight other contenders, such as Maura Sullivan, a Marine veteran and former official in the Obama administration. Others included Carleigh Beriont, a union organizer, and Christian Urrutia, an Army National Guard officer and international law attorney. Urrutia eventually withdrew from the race and supported Shaheen, who rapidly emerged as the frontrunner.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who announced her retirement in March, endorsed her daughter, stating, “I’m so proud that Stefany is answering the call to serve the district she was born and raised in, where she has started a business, worked on the Portsmouth City Council, and advocated for affordable health care and clean water.” She remarked on Stefany’s commitment to winning voter support independently and meritoriously.

Stefany Shaheen is focusing on priorities including Medicare for All, enhanced tax incentives for first-time homebuyers, and restructuring Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Meanwhile, Maura Sullivan emphasized her military experience and past role with the Obama administration as an assistant secretary at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Her campaign highlighted her work in national security, healthcare reforms, and support for military families. Sullivan’s platform includes tackling price gouging, strengthening the VA, opposing Trump’s tariffs, and increasing federal housing development investments.

With the primary concluded, Shaheen moves forward to the general election scheduled for November 3. This election is significant not only for New Hampshire but also for national Democratic strategies to enhance their control in Congress.
