A Colorado judge has increased the bond for murder suspect Barry Morphew. Following his recent arrest by Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies, his bond has been raised from $3 million to $10 million, cash only.
During the court session, the judge cited Morphew’s potential to commit further offenses as a reason for modifying his bond. She stated his actions showed a lack of respect for the court and questioned his willingness to comply with conditions if they conflicted with his lifestyle.
Barry Morphew was taken into custody on September 3 in Boulder County. His arrest was based on an Alamosa County warrant for non-compliance. Boulder County deputies arrested him without incident at about 9:11 p.m., booking him into the local jail. This followed a filing by prosecutors for a warrant and bond modification.
Initially, on September 3, an order signed by the judge included a $3 million cash bond with national extradition instructions. A subsequent hearing on September 8 saw Morphew attending in person, where the bond was increased to $10 million.
After the hearing, deputies escorted Morphew from the courtroom. Prosecutors detailed GPS data revealing Morphew’s movement. He left his residence under a work exception but traveled to Denver International Airport. Prosecutors claim this trip, regardless of purpose, violated his release terms, citing him as a flight risk.
Prosecutors also mentioned additional trips Morphew made in Denver, including visits to various locations like a steakhouse and a liquor store, according to GPS tracking. Video evidence allegedly linked him to a hit-and-run incident at 8th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. He reportedly offered cash to another driver and departed the scene.
Prosecutors have been scrutinizing Morphew’s GPS data related to these movements as part of their ongoing investigation. Barry Morphew is facing trial for first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Suzanne Morphew. He has pleaded not guilty.
