Rep. Chris Pappas Wins Democratic Senate Nomination in New Hampshire

Rep. Chris Pappas secured the Democratic Senate nomination in New Hampshire, a crucial race for the Democrats in the midterm elections. The Associated Press reports Pappas defeated socialist candidate Karishma Manzur. This race is to succeed retiring Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, noted as the first woman to be elected both governor and senator in the U.S.

Republicans see this as a significant chance to capture a Democrat-held seat, which has been out of their reach for 16 years. The contest between Pappas and Manzur closed a six-month primary season marked by the far-left’s victories over centrists, highlighting an ideological battle within the party.

Manzur, though a newcomer, gained traction by advocating for universal health care, a $20 minimum wage, the abolition of ICE, and an end to U.S. military aid to Israel. She criticized Pappas, supported by AIPAC, labeling him as a ‘genocide enabler.’ Manzur also accused him of prioritizing corporate interests over constituent needs.

Chris Pappas has had his turn and has not been able to serve this state honorably. He hasn’t done a good job in serving his corporate donors, his AIPAC foreign-aligned lobbies, she alleged.

Pappas responded by affirming Israel as a historic U.S. ally. He criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions, anticipating a change in the U.S.-Israel dynamic with impending Israeli elections.

Pappas, a frontrunner with strong establishment and union backing, has rallied against a ‘rigged’ political system benefiting billionaires. Despite his popularity, Manzur accuses him of adopting her populist rhetoric due to a drop in the polls.

It’s really embarrassing and insulting to the people of New Hampshire. He’s been there for eight years. He has not provided any of that sort of populist messages, and now he’s realizing, wait, he’s dropping in the polls, and now he has to catch up, said Manzur.

Pappas defended his efforts in Congress since 2018 to eliminate big money from politics. He aims to appeal to the moderate majority of New Hampshire voters, emphasizing pragmatism over political extremes in the state.

In the general election, Pappas will compete against either former Sen. John E. Sununu or former Sen. Scott Brown. He stressed unity post-primary, focusing on the critical nature of holding the New Hampshire seat to maintain Democratic control in the Senate.

As Pappas stated, I’ve always been able to bring people together, and that’s how you do things in New Hampshire. He highlighted the importance of the upcoming election, emphasizing that the seat is pivotal in determining Senate power dynamics.
