A luxurious superyacht, valued at nine figures, recently docked in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles. Its secretive arrival did not remain hidden for long, as locals speculated the owner to be J.K. Rowling, the renowned “Harry Potter” author. The California Post confirmed these rumors, calling it the “worst-kept secret on the Marina.”
The yacht, named Samsara, arrived with its name covered. It seems this was an attempt to avoid unwanted attention due to protests against Rowling’s views on transgender issues, as reported by the Post. Despite the attempt at anonymity, the yacht was identified by followers of the Instagram account twogirls.oneboat, with many recognizing it as Rowling’s. The vessel is reported to be worth $150 million.
Images show the yacht, a towering 290 feet long, dominating its surroundings in the marina. Yet, Rowling has not been seen publicly in the area, the Post notes. Superyacht broker Chris Cecil-Wright explains that yacht owners often mask their vessels to maintain privacy, though hiding a name is unusual.
Privacy and Luxury at Sea
Speaking to Fox News Digital, Cecil-Wright highlighted that privacy is a significant asset for high-profile yacht owners, especially those who are easily recognizable. For someone like Rowling, maintaining a private life can be a challenge. A superyacht offers a secluded retreat, similar to an exclusive island.
The yacht can host 12 guests and 26 crew members. It features luxury amenities such as a circular pool, a cinema, and a beach club, according to SuperYachtFan. Built by the Dutch shipbuilder Oceanco, the Samsara was originally named Infinity and completed in 2015. It once belonged to businessman Eric Smidt and later to Australian billionaire Brett Blundy before Rowling’s purchase in 2023.
Rowling, who once relied on government assistance, is now one of the richest authors in Britain, with a net worth of $1.2 billion according to Forbes as of early September. The yacht’s Sanskrit name, “Samsara,” means “wandering.”
Superyachts like Rowling’s offer the wealthy a rare blend of luxury and privacy. Often seen as floating mansions, these vessels provide their owners the freedom to travel discreetly between exclusive destinations.
