Since 2013, these hackers have compromised networks, highlighting a persistent threat to cybersecurity. The Department vows to pursue foreign cyber criminals, indicating that even the passage of time won’t hinder such efforts.
In recent developments, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating a separate cybersecurity incident. This event involves a standalone system, which senior Justice Department officials have labeled a ‘major incident’ based on federal guidelines. The Qilin ransomware group claims responsibility, though no evidence has been provided to substantiate these claims.
The affected ATF system is distinct from the agency’s enterprise network. There is no indication that the broader network, including the eForms system, was affected. After detecting the incident, ATF isolated the compromised environment and initiated forensic and response actions. The agency is working with the Justice Department to investigate.
Cybersecurity sources have reported the Qilin group’s claims but have not verified them. Fox News Digital contacted ATF and the Justice Department for further comments, particularly regarding the designation of the incident as major and details about data access.
