Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville criticized House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries for his recent meeting with U.S. special envoy Jared Kushner. Carville expressed disapproval of any interactions with President Donald Trump’s close circle, asserting that Democrats, irrespective of their stance on various issues, unanimously agree on avoiding such meetings.
The critique follows reports that Jeffries had discussions with Trump’s son-in-law about potential areas for cooperation like housing and immigration, as initially reported by The New York Times. Carville, directly addressing Jeffries, emphasized the varied positions within the Democratic Party on issues such as Medicare for all and policing, yet stressed a collective stance against engaging with Trump’s associates.
Despite the ostensibly constructive nature of the meeting, Carville insisted that Democrats’ readiness to negotiate does not encompass interactions with Trump’s aides. Carville bluntly stated that Democrats nationwide, regardless of their alignment within the party, share this view.
Carville also offered a stark suggestion for dealing with Kushner, proposing that Democrats should interrogate Kushner’s dealings before a committee rather than engaging in dialogue. He accused the Trump administration of incompetence and engaging in clandestine agreements.
Additionally, Carville urged Jeffries to refrain from further meetings with Trump’s circle. The fallout from Jeffries’ meeting with Kushner led to public scrutiny, especially given that news of the meeting became public afterward.
