A 17-year-old boy from Utah faces accusations of murdering his mother and 8-year-old half-brother. Prosecutors reported a masked figure, resembling the suspect, appearing on video cameras in the neighborhood following a night-time shooting.
Saratoga Springs police arrested the teen on August 14 after a 17-month investigation involving numerous search warrants and extensive forensic work. He entered juvenile detention on two counts of first-degree murder, later charged in juvenile court with aggravated murder and obstruction of justice.
The case may move to adult district court, but the suspect’s identity remains undisclosed due to his age.
Police responded to an emergency call at the family home on Willowbrook Lane, March 28, 2025, finding victims Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, and Eli Painter, 8, with gunshot injuries. Both succumbed despite rescue efforts. Another family member discovered their bodies the next day.
Surveillance footage allegedly captured an argument at 11:30 p.m., with recognizable voices of the suspect and victims, followed by gunshots minutes later.
The investigation revealed home video evidence of a masked figure walking in the area between 2:34 a.m. and 2:59 a.m., matching the suspect’s height and build. Prosecutors suggest the weapon might have been discarded, possibly by the Jordan River, linked to the suspect’s route. FBI and local police conducted searches but found no firearms aside from BB guns.
Investigators reportedly found gunshot residue on clothing the teen wore when victims were discovered. His DNA surfaced beneath a victim’s fingernails, and on the waistband of shorts worn by Lyman, according to reports.
A room search unveiled notes referring to forensic testing and a handwritten message indicating, “This is a murder story.”
Forensic evaluations took time, yet consistent investigative efforts eventually pinpointed the suspect. Extensive collaboration from several law enforcement agencies helped build the case.
The arrest follows the family’s year-long pleas for justice. “Not a day has passed without feeling the weight of this loss,” Orton family reflected. The arrest signals progress toward justice, yet emphasizes that no legal action can compensate for the loss.
