An American couple’s jog through Venice took a surprising turn. Their decision to run shirtless caught the attention of locals, leading to viral acclaim online. In a video shared on Instagram, the woman explained how she and her boyfriend drew negative reactions during their morning run.
“We didn’t know running shirtless through Venice is illegal,” she said. “People were visibly upset and even yelled at Mike. Once we checked online, we understood it violates local rules.”

The video, liked by nearly half a million users, sparked viewer criticism. Comments ranged from “Everyone should be wearing a shirt” to questions about why the rule exists in a place known for its nude art and beaches. “Are people expected to Google ‘jogging laws Italy’?” one user asked.
Venice isn’t the only destination with unexpected restrictions, according to Eric Bowman of Travel Pulse. He noted that popular vacation spots are introducing new rules to manage tourist behavior as numbers swell. Common issues include “drunken debauchery” and failing to adhere to local etiquette.
“Venice and other places want to maintain order,” Bowman explained. “Visitors should expect rules against wearing swimwear outside of beaches and more.” Clothing choices often stir trouble, and Bowman recommends covering up before leaving beach areas.
Additional guidelines mentioned by Bowman include refraining from wearing high heels at ancient Greek ruins or camouflage in certain Caribbean nations.
Bowman’s key advice is booking with a travel adviser. This approach can help tourists navigate local laws and potentially avoid fines. Advisers might charge a fee, but many offer affordable services that are worthwhile for the informed traveler.
