A global coalition of soccer fan groups initiated a petition on Thursday demanding Gianni Infantino step down as FIFA president. The petition follows Infantino’s controversial attempt to sell future World Cup earnings to private investors.
Named ‘InfantinOut,’ the petition also urges a restructuring of FIFA to avoid similar issues in the future. It expressed disappointment over Infantino’s proposed commercial venture. Though he eventually abandoned the plan, the backlash remained strong.
Signatories to the petition include Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, and North America’s Independent Supporters Council, as well as around 40 national fan organizations worldwide.
Despite significant criticism, Infantino continues to resist resignation. UEFA declared a lack of confidence in him, with additional critiques from leadership bodies such as CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation.
The petition condemns Infantino’s leadership style, describing it as marked by centralized power, lack of transparency, and inadequate accountability. These factors have eroded trust in FIFA.
To safeguard FIFA’s credibility and the sport’s future, the petition demands Infantino’s resignation. It also highlights past controversies, like his support for the unsuccessful European Super League and the proposal to hold World Cups biennially.
