A tragic incident has led to the arrest of Patrick Theodore “Ted” Barnett, 40, following the death of his wife, Lindsey Barnett, 37, at their Colorado home. He is being held without bond on suspicion of first-degree murder, as stated by Lakewood police.
Details from an arrest affidavit, obtained by Fox News Digital, shed light on the reasons investigators suspect Barnett. On August 13, 2026, Barnett called 911 around 6 a.m., claiming Lindsey had cut herself and was unresponsive. He reported that their two young children were present in the Lakewood residence.
First responders discovered Lindsey in the shower, a 5- to 6-inch incision across her neck. By her side lay a 5-inch serrated knife. However, the scene presented inconsistencies.
Authorities noticed significant bloodstains on the bed, sheets, and pillow, with a blood trail extending to the bathroom. However, there was minimal blood near Lindsey’s body. Officers also noted a dainty footprint and disturbed plant soil leading to the bathroom.
Barnett informed investigators of ongoing marital issues, mentioning he slept in the basement while Lindsey occupied the main bedroom. He claimed to find her bleeding in the shower after awakening at 5:30 a.m.
The affidavit reports fresh scratches and blood on Barnett, which he attributed to an unrelated ultimate Frisbee injury. Nonetheless, crime scene photographs revealed additional marks consistent with defensive wounds.
Forensic examinations found blood traces on Barnett’s neck and ear. Contradictorily, his hands were free of blood, despite assertions he had moved Lindsey.
Lindsey had various injuries, described in the affidavit, suggesting defensive wounds. Notably, a major neck artery seemed affected.
Barnett alleged Lindsey had battled prepartum and postpartum depression. However, Lindsey’s mother denied any suicidal behavior, emphasizing Lindsey’s future plans. She also reported a tense marriage, describing Barnett as verbally abusive, without prior physical aggression.
Investigators discovered Barnett had a girlfriend and initially denied the affair when questioned. In a subsequent interview, he admitted to the relationship but stated Lindsey was aware and unconcerned.
Detectives cited forensic evidence indicating Lindsey was moved from the bed to the shower, highlighting Barnett’s injuries and statement inconsistencies as integral to the murder charge. Barnett faces a court appearance on August 20.
Hutchinson Elementary acknowledged Lindsey’s role as an art teacher, praising her dedication. The community expressed profound loss, with support services provided for those in need.
