Senator Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, faced scrutiny during a South Carolina GOP Senate debate. She admitted that she lacks detailed knowledge about national security while she campaigns for a full six-year term.
This admission came shortly before the state’s GOP Senate runoff between Graham and Representative Ralph Norman. A moderator questioned whether Taiwan and the South China Sea pose national security issues for the United States. Graham’s response was forthright: ‘National security is not my thing, not my area of expertise.’
Despite her self-confessed limitations, Graham has the support of President Donald Trump, who encouraged her to run for a full term. Trump endorsed her candidacy following her appointment to the Senate by South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster.
Former Senator Lindsey Graham, known for his focus on national security, left a significant legacy in this area. In contrast, Darline Graham acknowledged her lack of expertise, even while expressing strong support for the military due to her family’s history of service. Her brother served in the Air Force for 33 years, and her father served in the Army.
‘I’m not a polished politician up here… But I do support the military.’ – Darline Graham
Her comments triggered a range of responses on social media. Former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley emphasized the critical nature of national security expertise in the Senate. Radio host Tara Servatius noted that even a teenager seemed better informed on such issues.
Following the debate, Graham stated that South Carolinians are more concerned with economic issues over international matters like the South China Sea, as reported by the Post and Courier.
During a July interview on Fox News’ ‘Hannity’, Graham voiced her belief that domestic concerns such as groceries and healthcare should take precedence over national security, contrasting with her late brother’s priorities.
In addition to her national security gaffe, Graham also misstated South Carolina’s population during the debate. She mentioned 50 million residents when the actual figure is approximately 5 million. Representative Nancy Mace highlighted this error on social media, expressing disbelief over Graham’s candidacy.
